Best in Print

In the field of books on careers, references come and go. Sifting through all the publications on career can be overwhelming … and often disappointing.

Here are a few of my favorites – ‘seminal’ books that stand out from all the others … and have stood the test of a little time. Most are available from your public library … but you may want to purchase a few for your own collection.

These are books you’ll return to time and time again over the course of your career … and you’ll want to pass them on as recommendations to your good friends and family when they need them.

My favorites on … sorting out who you are and who you want to grow into, what career identity will ‘fit’ …

  • Transitions: making sense of Life’s changes 2nd edition by William Bridges (2004). Strategies for coping with difficult, painful & confusing times in your life. Chapters on relationships & work life, I usually recommend the whole book for my clients. Bridges focuses on what he calls the ‘Neutral Zone’ – that time in your life when you know that one stage of your life is over … but you have no idea what the next will be – the next career, partner, etc. It’s uncomfortable … and most of us just want the new goal in sight … so that we can put our heads down and work toward attaining it. What the book does so effectively (in my opinion) is normalize this anxiety and calm you down so that you can stay in that ‘not-knowing’ stage a little longer, while you sort it out … instead of reaching for the easiest goal.

  • Hand me down dreams: how families influence our career paths and how we can reclaim them. By Mary Jacobsen (2010).

  • Heat and Light: advice for the next generation of journalists by Mike Wallace and Beth Knobel (2010).

  • The career guide for creative and unconventional people by Carol Eikelberry (2007).

  • So you think you want to be a doctor, eh?: a guidebook to Canadian medical school by Dr. Anne Berndl (2007).

  • So you want to be a lawyer, eh? : law school in Canada by Adam Letourneau (2007).

  • Getting from College to Career: your essential guide to succeeding in the real world by Lindsay Pollak (2007).

My all time favorite résumé, cover letter, job search & interview references:

  • Knock em Dead; secrets and strategies for first time job seekers by Martin Yate (2013). The whole Knock em Dead series is very good – get the latest editions.

  • Résumé Magic; trade secrets of a professional resume writer by Susan Britton Whitcomb 4th edition (2010) - simply the best I’ve ever found on this subject.

  • Cover letter Magic: trade secrets of professional resume writers 2nd edition by Wendy S Enelow & Louise Kursmark (2004).

  • The Quick Résumé & Cover Letter Book: write and use an effective resume and cover letter in only one day by J. Michael Farr (2011).

  • Fearless Interviewing: what to do before, during & after an interview by Marky Stein (2001).

For those who cringe when they hear the word ‘networking’ :

  • How to work a room: your essential guide to savvy socializing – for business & personal success By Susan Roane (2007).

  • The panic-free job search: unleash the power of the web and social networking to get hired by Paul Hill (2012).
